Car insurance coverage

Farmers lets you pick and choose the coverage that’s right for you. But if you’re confused about different auto coverage options or how much coverage you might want, we can help there, too. Here are the most common coverages.

Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive coverage helps pay for losses or damage to your car caused by incidents like theft, vandalism, hail, wind, fire and more.

Example: A sudden hailstorm cracks your car’s windshield and dents your roof and hood. Comprehensive coverage can help when your car is damaged by something other than a collision

Collision coverage

When you’re in a crash with other vehicles or objects, collision coverage can help pay to repair or replace your vehicle.

collision coverage illustration

Example: You lose traction on an icy road and your car slides into a guardrail. Collision coverage can help repair damage to your car — or compensate you for its value if it’s a total loss.

Liability coverage

Required by law in most states, liability provides coverage for the cost of injury to others and damage to their car or property when you’re at fault in an accident.

liability coverage illustration

Example: You cause a minor collision in rush-hour traffic. Another car is damaged, and the driver complains of neck pain. Liability coverage can help to compensate the driver for injuries and pay for repairs to the driver’s car.

Uninsured and under-insured motorist coverages

Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) helps pay costs if you or your passengers are injured by the driver of an uninsured vehicle. Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) helps pay to repair your car if it is damaged by an uninsured vehicle.

Underinsured motorist coverages can help pay costs associated with injuries and property damage when the at-fault driver has insurance but doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the damages.

Example: You suffer minor injuries when another driver runs a red light and clips your car’s rear fender. The other driver is at fault and doesn’t have insurance. UMBI coverage can help pay costs associated with injuries (up to your policy limit) when caused by an at-fault driver who does not have insurance. UMPD can help pay to repair your car.

Roadside assistance

If your car is disabled, roadside assistance coverage can provide 24/7 service and cover costs for things like towing, a tire change, locksmith service and jump starts.

Example: You’re on a family road trip to the beach when your car’s battery dies. With roadside assistance, a service operator can meet you at your location to charge your battery, or it can help pay for the service to replace a battery.

You may also want to think about the types of coverage you want, and how much, before you start the quote process. Review the coverage on your current policy as a point of reference.

How to compare car insurance quotes

Start by requesting quotes for the same types of coverage, with the same limits and deductibles. For example, you can ask each insurer for a quote for your state’s minimum liability coverage, plus collision and comprehensive coverages (up to the value of your car), and select the same deductibles for each quote.

A quote for a policy with lower limits, a higher deductible or less coverage may look more affordable, but it might not provide the coverage you want. The Insurance Information Institute suggests getting at least three quotes to help you find coverage at a cost that suits you and evaluating each company’s reputation and rating, along with the cost of the policy.

Why do I need car insurance?

In most states, you’re required by law to have a policy that covers your state’s minimum car insurance requirements for liability coverage. Keep in mind that accidents can be expensive, and the minimum coverage required may not be sufficient to cover your total costs from damage, injuries or lawsuits. If your car is under a loan or lease, the finance company typically will also require you to carry collision and comprehensive coverages to protect their interest in your car.

How much is car insurance?

Because risks and regulations vary by state, so do auto insurance rates. In addition to where you live and the type and amount of coverage you buy, details like how much you drive, your driving record and the type of car you drive also factor into the amount you pay for car insurance.

How to file an auto claim with Farmers

You can file an auto insurance claim with Farmers through mobile app, by logging into your account or calling a claims representative through the claims center at 1-800-435-7764. Before you contact claims, it’s helpful to have certain information at your fingertips for the car insurance claims process, including insurance and contact information for other parties involved, pictures of the damage, and a written account of the accident.

Getting car insurance starts with a quote. How long the quote process takes can be as little as five minutes if you have all of the necessary information in hand about your vehicle and the drivers you want to include on the policy. It might take a few hours (or less) to make the contract with the insurer legally binding, again depending on whether you have the necessary documents.

With most auto policies, many of your own policy’s coverages extend to cars you rent for  personal use. Check with your Farmers agent to be sure, or consider car insurance for rental cars through the rental car company.

Yes, you can add teen drivers to your policy as soon as they get a learner’s permit. Laws about car insurance for teens vary from state to state, so talk to your agent to learn more about your state’s requirements.

Yes, in most states.*** If you add accident forgiveness coverage to your policy, Farmers will forgive one at-fault accident for every three years you drive without one, to keep your premium from going up because of one accident.

Car insurance rates typically change for one of two reasons.

1) A change in your situation, such as your driving record or adding a new car or driver to your policy.

2) A change in circumstances beyond your control, such as an increase in the cost of repairing cars or a national rise in the number and severity of car accidents.

Yes, you can change your coverage any time, as long as you are the “named insured” on the policy. You don’t have to wait until the policy renews to make changes.

You can pay your bill online, in your agent’s office or by mail. Find out which policies you can pay online, more payment options and other information in Farmers billing FAQ.
