Collision coverage is often recommended for car owners who drive newer, more expensive vehicles (or older cars that hold their value) and drivers who are required to have collision coverage on leased or financed cars.

What is collision insurance coverage?

When you run into another car, or another car runs into you, collision coverage can help you pay to repair or replace your car. This coverage also helps pay to repair or replace your car if you back into a tree, a fence and other objects (including buildings). You can file a claim for a collision loss regardless of who is at fault. What does collision insurance generally cover?

Whether you’re hit by another car during a rush hour traffic jam or you forget to activate the parking brake and your vehicle rolls into another car, collision coverage can help you pay to repair or replace your car in these and other scenarios, regardless of who is at fault. Depending on your policy limits and deductible, collision coverage generally covers:

  • Crashes with other vehicles, whether your vehicle was moving or parked
  • Collisions with objects (think: fences, signs, buildings)
  • Rollover crashes

What doesn’t collision generally cover?

Collision only provides coverage for damage to your insured car — not another driver’s car or property, or other types of accidents or losses. Collision coverage can be purchased, along with comprehensive and liability insurance coverages — sometimes called full coverage — to cover a broader range of losses.
