My dad battled cancer for 16 years before he lost his fight. Although, like they say, it gets a little easier over time, the truth is, it’s a loss my family still feel every day. But my dad did something that made it possible for us to grieve our loss — and even celebrate his life — without being distracted or burdened by the financial reality of losing him.
He had a life insurance policy.
This simple gesture gave my family the peace of mind we needed at the time to face all of the little details and decisions we had to make. Where do we bury him, what happens next, can we stay in our home without his financial support — all of these questions were answered by the legacy he left behind. Not only were we able to pay off the mortgage, I started my business with a portion of the policy he left for us.
That’s one of the reasons this job is so personal for me. My dad left a legacy that, believe it or not, I’ll be able to tell my children and grandchildren about. He left me this path for my future. His gift gave me a strong sense of my purpose in life.
As an agent, I walk a fine line trying to explain how life insurance works and helping my customers understand the very real financial impact of such a loss. No one really wants to think about it. But this is my mission — my purpose. This isn’t a sales transaction to me. I’m here to help my customers think about their own purpose, their own futures and what they want it to look like for their family if something were to happen to them. My mission is to help our customers protect themselves one day at a time, one life at a time, because I believe that no matter how chaotic and unpredictable life is — especially these days — there are things we can do, decisions we can make, to give ourselves and our families a sense of security and hope.
