When I was 16, I lost my 7-year old little sister in an accident after she got off the school bus. It’s still hard to say that so matter-of-factly, not only because I lost my sister at such a young age but the loss just devastated my mother. She was never able to work again. Our family received a settlement that allowed us to move far away from the memory — across the globe, where my mother lived until she passed away many years later.
I learned early in life how much a tragedy can fundamentally change your life, and how financial security can provide an essential avenue for starting over. Without that security, we might never have been able to leave that town and rebuild our lives.
As an insurance agent, I see customers struggle with the idea of paying for life insurance. They have this vague understanding that it’s important, but they might say $25 a month isn’t in their budget for a $250,000 policy1. More than anything, I think it’s the idea that dying or losing a loved one is too down-the-road or unimaginable.
I feel like it’s my job to tell people my own story, so they understand that it’s not just financial security — it can be an emotional lifeline that allows you to start over or manage that new reality and move on as best as you can. It’s also why I’ve made sure everyone in my family has a permanent life insurance policy, so we all have some measure of financial security in an unpredictable world.
