How pet insurance works

Pet insurance works like other types of insurance. To enroll, you provide information about your pet, such as medical history and vaccination records, and you select the coverage you want. Once you purchase a policy, there may be a waiting period before certain coverages or benefits take effect. This can be as little as one to three days for an accident, or 14 to 30 days for an illness.3 When your pet receives a covered treatment at the vet, you submit the receipt and claim form to the insurer for reimbursement.

How much does pet insurance cost?

The price of a BestBenefit Accident and Illness plan is based on plan selections and your pet’s age, breed and where you live. To see actual premium amounts for your pet, you’ll need to get a quote. The Accident-Only plan is available at a monthly rate of $6 for cats and $9 for dogs, regardless of age or breed. (In Washington state, the flat monthly rates are $7 and $10, respectively.)

Frequently asked questions about pet insurance

If your pet has a medical issue or accident that’s covered by your plan, pet insurance can help you pay for expensive veterinary care. For example, the average treatment cost for a dog with a broken bone could be $3,192.4 Advances in veterinary medicine and equipment have also increased the cost of treatment. Pet insurance can cover up to 90% of the cost, depending on the plan you select.

Yes. Pets Best plans offer coverage for multiple pets, and there may be a discount for people who insure more than one pet. Each pet will have its own coverage, including its own policy limits, deductibles and reimbursement rates, but you can manage all pets under one account.

As with most pet insurance providers, Pets Best plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions. This means if your pet has been diagnosed with or treated for a condition before the policy’s effective date, that condition will not be covered by the insurance plan.

Yes, you can choose any licensed veterinarian, specialist or emergency clinic in the U.S. or Canada. Pets Best is an open-network insurer, which means you don’t have to use a specific vet and you’re not limited to a network of approved veterinarians. Once you pay for your pet’s veterinary care, you can submit a claim for reimbursement according to your policy’s coverage terms.

Yes, you can change features of your coverage on a Pets Best policy at any time, but there may be some limits.

For example, you can increase your coverage (switch your plans, increase your reimbursement percentage or adjust your deductible), but the new coverage will generally apply after your next policy renewal — or it might require a new policy. And you may be able to add or remove the Wellness Routine Care or accident coverage option, depending on the terms of your policy. However, you cannot change coverage to include a pre-existing condition once it has been diagnosed.
