Corporate Citizenship

From the beginning, in a tiny one-room office almost 100 years ago, Farmers Insurance ® has strived to put people first — our customers, employees, Farmers® agents and all of our communities. Here’s how we do it.

OUR WORKPLACE

Taking care of our employees is a top priority. Here are some of the ways we provide support:

Farmers Family Fund

Farmers® employees share a long history of giving generously of their time and money to support others — including their co-workers — in their time of need. The Farmers Family Fund enables the Farmers community to respond quickly when eligible employees experience a qualifying unexpected financial hardship. Since its launch in 2012, it has provided more than $4 million in grants to support employees.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging is the foundation of our organizational culture. Farmers has a vibrant network of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that are led by employees and open to all. The ERGs strive to support employees in bringing their whole selves to work. Visit our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging page to learn more.

OUR COMMUNITIES

Giving back, serving others and making a positive impact in communities across the country is at the core of Farmers social responsibility efforts.

Disaster Resilience

One of the major ways we seek to serve our communities is through philanthropic efforts focused on disaster resilience. Together with our nonprofit partners, we help communities plan and prepare for natural disasters and recover in the aftermath.

Disaster Relief Giving Campaigns

To help make it easy for our employees to contribute to nonprofits working on the ground to save lives, respond and rebuild after natural disasters, we set up giving campaigns and, in some instances, match dollars donated by our employees.

Economic Empowerment

Farmers supports programs that work to eliminate financial barriers for low-moderate-income communities. We work with organizations to deliver financial literacy, insurance education and career development opportunities.

Economic Empowerment includes a focus on:

  • Career development and career readiness programs
  • Financial literacy and funding programs that deliver financial education
  • Introducing risk and insurance at a younger age, connecting the dots between financial readiness and being prepared for the unexpected

Nonprofit Partners

As Farmers works to maintain a high standard of responsible corporate citizenship, we donate our time and resources to nonprofits that help make a difference in our communities. We have strategically aligned ourselves with three national nonprofits: SBP, Operation BBQ Relief, and Junior Achievement.

SBP’s mission is to shrink the time between disaster and recovery. SBP takes a holistic approach by working across the disaster cycle - preparing at-risk communities prior to a disaster, responding to immediate needs after disaster, and then helping communities and citizens rebuild in a prompt, efficient and predictable manner.

Since its founding in 2006, SBP's programs have helped 4,407 disaster-impacted families rebuild their homes and lives with the help of more than 180,000 volunteers in cities across the United States and in The Bahamas. SBP has reached over 20 million people with Disaster Preparedness campaigns and plays a leadership role in improving systems within the disaster ecosystem that serve the most vulnerable families.

Through SBP, Farmers is building resilience at the community level by supporting the placement of Resilience and Recovery Fellows, whose job is to access funding for mitigation projects in small to medium sized communities around the country. In 2023 Fellows secured nearly $50M in mitigation funding for their respective communities. Additionally, SBP’s preparedness education reached 9,730,530 individuals in high-risk communities across the United States, better equipping them with the tools to prepare themselves when disaster strikes.

Operation BBQ Relief a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to serving communities after disasters, providing hot barbecue meals to those in need, first responders, and relief workers. Since its inception in the wake of the devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri, in May 2011, Operation BBQ Relief has evolved into a powerful force for good, embodying its mission to connect, inspire, serve, educate, and feed those in need. Operation BBQ Relief's commitment extends far beyond disaster response. The organization continues to make a lasting impact year-round through initiatives like The Always Serving Project® and Camp OBR. These programs provide purpose, connection, and support to our heroes in uniform, including the Military, Veterans, Families of the Fallen, First Responders, and their Families, and address food insecurity issues in our communities.

In 2023 Farmers employees and agents provided $10,590 worth of volunteer time to support Operation BBQ Relief. Volunteers served meals to communities impacted by disaster, painted cabins for the newly opened Camp OBR, and provided hands-on aid through Operation BBQ Relief’s Always Serving Project. Jeff Blaze, Field Service and Support Scout, shared this on our relationship with OBR: “When we deploy to a weather-related catastrophe, we are in constant communication with OBR to see what types of information they have gathered regarding damages, neighborhood access, food needs of the community, first responder and government organization locations just to name a few. OBR provides us with real estate inside their footprint to set up our catastrophe vehicles if needed and one of the most beneficial resources is the food they provide. While OBR can make upwards of 50,000 meals per day, they work with us and our agents to provide hundreds of meals every day for us to pick up and provide to the public within their communities and at our relief site locations. Our relationship with OBR helps set us apart from our competitors by providing us with an additional service to comfort our customers and their communities during their greatest time of need.”

Junior Achievement USA is the nation's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures, and make smart academic and economic choices. This bolsters the local workforce and contributes to our global economic growth. JA's portfolio of K-12th grade programs — in the core content areas of work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy — ignite the spark in young people to experience and realize the opportunities and realities of work and life in the 21st century.

In October 2023 Farmers employees volunteered with Junior Achievement regions across the nation, positively impacting 903 students. Ramses Ramirez, CRT Property Claims Supervisor and Board Member of Junior Achievement of El Paso reflected on his volunteer experience: “I was hesitant about going into a high school and talking to the students about personal finance. Once I had a chance to go over the material and get into the classroom, I really enjoyed the experience. I had an opportunity to share my own personal experiences with the kids, explain what mistakes I might have made, and how they can be successful in managing their money once they leave high school.”

FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN

The Farmers Insurance Open®, a marquee event on the PGA TOUR, is held in January at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California. Since becoming the title sponsor in 2010, Farmers has developed the tournament to center around much more than just golf. The tournament continues to make an impact on the community through its charitable platform, Together on the Tee. The Farmers Insurance Open has generated millions of dollars benefiting local charities, including the Champions for Youth organizations that support at-risk and underserved youth and low-income military families.

Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) Tour

The APGA Tour was established in 2010 to bring greater diversity to golf.

  • Farmers Insurance began working with the APGA Tour years ago to help the organization in its mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf by developing African Americans and other minorities for careers in golf.
  • In January 2020, Farmers Insurance was proud to be the first PGA TOUR tournament to host an APGA Tour event during tournament week with the formation of the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational. In 2022, the event made history again, with the final round broadcast nationally on The Golf Channel, which continues today.
  • Farmers is increasing its financial support for player access and working to provide professional and career development opportunities for athletes.

VOLUNTEERISM & EMPLOYEE PROGRAMS

Farmers is passionate about helping make a difference in the communities where we work and live. Over the past seven years alone, Farmers has donated more than $39.1 million to support worthwhile causes, and our employees have volunteered to the tune of 315,400 hours of their time.

These are just a few examples of what we’re talking about:

  • Rebuild Initiative — Farmers employees have picked up hammers and hard hats to assist our nonprofit partner SBP in rebuilding homes damaged or destroyed by natural disasters.

  • Skills-Based Support for Nonprofits — We tap the skill sets of our employees to support communities in a multitude of ways and help nonprofits build efficiencies internally. These initiatives include marketing support, talent recruitment and leadership development training for nonprofit executives.

  • Blood Drives — Our employees support local communities by opting to roll up a sleeve and donate blood through organizations like the American Red Cross.

  • Benevity is the charitable giving and volunteering platform utilized by employees. Here, employees search for volunteer opportunities near them, track volunteer time and make donations to causes they care about. All nonprofits engaging with Farmers must be registered on Benevity. Nonprofits can register with Benevity to receive donations and post volunteer opportunities here.

  • Farmers Community Champions (FCCs) are employees that have stepped up to support volunteer initiatives in their local communities.

  • The Community Grant Program offered by Farmers helps support local nonprofits that align with our corporate giving initiatives. Local nonprofits we have supported include the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, the Search Dog Foundation and more.

  • The Volunteer Incentive Program recognizes employees who are committed to serving communities where employees, customers, and agents live and work. It also enables Farmers to support the causes our employees care about. Farmers employees are eligible to track volunteer time, both from company-sponsored events or independent volunteering. Donation currency accrues at a rate of $12.50 per hour, up to $500 per year, and can then be disbursed to eligible charities of the employee’s choice.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Our Commitment

Farmers continues to take measures to become a more environmentally focused organization that operates in a way that benefits our people, planet and communities.

What We’re Doing

Fleet

  • We’re transitioning all sedan and SUV fleet vehicles to hybrid and electric by year-end 2026.

Paper

  • We reduced our internal paper use by over 80% since 2015.
  • We save energy, fuel and paper through paperless billing and a significant reduction in internal print communications.

Plastic

  • In 2019, polystyrene and plastic were removed from our operations wherever biodegradable alternatives were practical.

IMPACT Community Capital

  • In the late 1990s, Farmers, along with other prominent insurers, founded IMPACT Community Capital (ICC), an organization striving to more efficiently make socially responsible investments in traditionally underserved communities. These investments seek both a solid financial return and a positive sustainable and societal impact.

Our Employees

The Go Green Team was established to help reinforce the enterprise’s commitment to operating in a more sustainable way. Raising awareness around environmental sustainability and encouraging employees to be involved is critical to helping make an impact across our organization and society as a whole.
